We shall drive for about 2.5 hours before reaching our first stop along the route in a place call Cusipata. This is where we shall have a delicious Andean breakfast.
We will then head towards Quillihuani which is the starting point of the trek along the Rainbow Mountain ascent. We will come across many Quechua settlements. There are several indigenous villages here, inhabited by Andean tribes who have lived here for centuries. Their unique culture adds beautiful colors to the surroundings of the Rainbow Mountains otherwise lines views of snow-capped peaks. The beautiful colors of Quechua culture and the Andean highland landscape make this hike a wonderful one. Herds of llamas and other native animals shall cross our path as well. A 2 hours hike shall bring us to the renowned viewpoint on the Rainbow Mountain 5036 meters above sea level. This peak is locally known as the Vinicunca Mountain – the mountain of seven colors. The Rainbow Mountain is a part of the Andean alpine range of Vilcanota and is located near the famous Ausangate mountain held sacred by the natives. This mountain range is known for its snow-capped stunning peaks. The Rainbow Mountain itself had been covered with only white snow until a few years back. Its colors, red, maroon, gold, lavender, green etc., look the most beautiful and rich when the sun shines the brightest.
We shall take the descent via the Red Valley after having spent ample time at the viewpoint. This is a less travelled route and shall give you a fine view of one of the many yet the most different natural wonder of Peru. This canyon is known for its red soil and green patches of beautiful grass all along. The red valley is quieter as compared to the Rainbow Mountain. It is peaceful and serves as a brilliant match to the mountain of seven colors. We shall descend till the parking area and takes 2 hours as well.
